Murals

Murals: A Collaboration
Murals are customized paintings, a collaboration between the client
and the artist. They can be simple Trompe L’oeil (French
for trick of the eye) a landscape, a portrait or a combination.
If you have an idea for your wall Judy can paint it.
Murals can be painted on canvas. The client can then hire a professional
wallpaperer to marouflage (a special technique to hang canvas)
the canvas to your wall. The advantage of this is to be able to
remove the painting should you decide to move.

Commissioning a Mural
In order to commission a mural it is best to have an idea of the
size and wall on which you plan to have the mural applied. An
idea of what you would like the mural to be may be described to
the artist. At this time a nonrefundable deposit of $100 is required.
On receipt of the deposit and any photos provided for reference
the artist will make sketches of your idea. Sketches may be adjusted
to a completed vision approved by both the client and the artist.
When the sketches are approved another payment of 25% of the estimated
cost is due. The artist then transfers the sketches to the wall
or canvas to be completed as a painting. Once the artist feels
the painting is completed the client may request any small adjustment
(not major changes in composition) such as making a tree brighter
or the tail of a horse longer, etc. On completion of this one
adjustment the balance is due. More adjustments may be made if
the artist feels they are of value to the look of the painting.
The Price of Murals
A general price for a mural is about 20 to 40 dollars per square
foot depending on the complexity of the mural and the surface
to which it is applied. The mural may be painted on canvas or
applied directly to your wall. When painting on canvas there are
additional cost considerations. When the artist works by painting
directly to the wall there is additional travel and hotel costs.
Should the artist need to travel to the site and stay at a hotel,
the cost of the mural will reflect these needs. More than one
correction may also add to the cost of the mural. And in New York
state sales tax must be charged as well.
